Well thats one reason Ollie mentioned unloading the unwanted articulations on the 2nd snare in SD3.
However if you know a bit about midi you will know that the Xstick has its own midi number so with editing you can achieve
a beat played on a snare becoming a beat played only on Xstick for half a bar or 16..... Its just a bit quicker and easier to do it the way Ollie suggested.
But you still will find some simple cut and paste will be needed for editing. Its worth doing an experiment and it will become clearer.
In Sd3 you can adjust the velocity curve and volume, pitch of the original snare snares X stick or articulation separately too which helps negate the need to do all this in some cases, but if you want different reverb on the X compared to the main snare for example an X Drum is the way to go.
